I like working with dark clay. The white glazes I use act as a veil and give my work a feeling of stillness. I look for contrasts in the rawness of the dark textured clay and the purity the lighter glazes.

Akiko often carves her vessels and works quickly and rhythmically. She says: "It should not be done with mechanical regularity as it can become too static. My first use of this was on the plate, just partly as a flower petal floating on the lake/pond."

The carved textures derive from Kamakura-bori, old folk craft of wood carving based in Kamakura in Japan. This is called Kohiki.

Prices range from £40 - £2000.
